Sequential Gearbox

Also known as Semi-Manual Gearbox.

A manual gearbox designed for high-performance driving or auto racing, in which the driver must select the gears in sequence, i.e. the gear directly before or after the gear currently engaged.

The gears may be changed using a button, paddle or lever. For example, if the transmission is in 3rd gear, pulling on the 'UP' paddle or button would up-shift, selecting 4th gear. Conversely, using the 'DOWN' paddle or button would cause the transmission to downshift into 2nd gear.
